Bahir Dar Fishery and Other Aquatic Life Research Center (BFALRC)

The Bahir Dar Fishery and Other Aquatic Life Research Center (BFALRC) was established in 1991 E.C by the bureau of agriculture. A year after, the center has been re-organized and become part of Amhara Agricultural Research Institute in 1992 E.C. BFALRC (1,635 m2) is found in Bahir Dar city, Kebelle 13, which is around Shimbit Michael. Specifically, the center is situated on a geographical coordinate of 11° 36' 39" latitude and 37° 22' 38" longitude, at an elevation of 1,790 meters. The center is the only fishery and aquatic life research center in the region. With this regional mandate, the Bahir Dar Fishery and Other Aquatic Life Research Center is dedicated in generating, adapting, and promoting various fishery-related research technologies aimed at improving the living conditions of the local community. The center has also made significant progresses in fishery management and aquatic biodiversity conservation across various water bodies within its regional mandate areas. In addition to its research initiatives, the center has brought a break- through in mass fish fingerling multiplication and distribution, which serve as initial seeds for aquaculture farmers and investors. Moreover, such mass fingerling multiplication has invaluable role in restocking both small and large water bodies in the region. These efforts underscore the center's commitment to sustainable fishery practices and the enhancement of aquatic life, contributing to the overall economic and environmental well-being of the community.

The Bahir Dar Fishery and Other Aquatic Life Research Center is organized into four research case teams, each with distinct roles and responsibilities. The Aquaculture Case Team is dedicated to developing innovative and practical aquaculture technologies, including feed formulation from locally available feed ingredients. The Fishery Management Case Team focuses on providing research-based recommendations to promote sustainable fishery practices. The Limnology Case Team on the other hand, examines the quality and properties of water in relation to fisheries so as to ensuring a healthy aquatic environment. The Socioeconomics and Research Extension Case Team conducts feasibility studies on the technologies developed by the other case teams, performs various survey-based research such as impact assessments, adoption studies, efficiency evaluations, and valuation. This case team also plays a crucial role in promoting those fishery technologies to a broader range of farmers through pre-extension demonstrations, pre-scaling up, and scaling out initiatives. In supporting and facilitating the efforts of these case teams, there are four divisions: Procurement, finance and property management, Human resources, Planning and budgeting, and Internal audit. Together, these teams contribute to the center's mission of improving community living conditions through advanced fishery research and sustainable practices
