Biography

Dr. Tesfaye Getachew is an animal breeder and geneticist with extensive experience in research and development. There is great interest in developing, implementing, and optimizing animal breeding programs for low-input systems. Committed to coordinating sheep and goat community-based breeding programs in Ethiopia; and supporting breeding programs in other African and Asian countries. Passionate about data accuracy and devoted to developing genetic databases, worked on estimation of breeding values, supervision of field activities, genetic dissemination, optimization, and upscaling of established community-based breeding programs. Over 20 years of research and development experience in different institutions, including the Ethiopian National Agricultural Research System and the Ethiopian Biodiversity Institute, engaged in animal genetic resource characterization and conservation, and genetic improvement focused on the implementation of on-farm and on-station sheep and goat breeding programs. Strong analytical skills with various software to deal with phenotypic, genetic, and genomic data, and the simulation of breeding plans. He authored/co-authored more than 115 scientific papers (84 in peer-reviewed journals, 32 in conference papers, proceedings, guidelines, working papers, and posters).
